I always loved the shopfront of Hodges and Figgis bookstore on Dawson Street, Dublin city centre, and was delighted a while ago to get a commission to do a painting of it . There are so few store fronts with charm these days and this one certainly shines with it's giant windows and displays. I used contrasting colours of yellows and oranges for the lights in the windows and reflections against the blues and mauves of the wet street in the finished acrylic painting.
Hodges and Figgis is the oldest bookstore in Ireland and has been operating since 1768. It has moved locations a couple of times and was housed in 104 Grafton Street when James Joyce referenced it in Ulysses : “What she?” (to whom might he address his ardent, metaphysical words), and thinks of a bookish “virgin at Hodges Figgis’ window” he spotted three days earlier and gave a “keen glance”.
