When I travel to a new place I try and do as much research as I can beforehand to get a sense of the place and the people who lived there. There's a lot written about the Blasket Islands and in particular one written by the descendants of the Islands that travelled out the United States and settled there. Many of these Islanders simply moved to Dunquin where they had a daily view of their original homes. In this work I was wrestling with the idea of that troubled relationship they had with the Islands, a place that was so deeply beautiful and ingrained in their identities but also so harsh an environment that eventually they were desperate to leave.
